Locus of Control

Locus of control is a psychological construct that describes how much you feel you are controlled by external events as opposed to by your own decisions, actions and hard work. Your interpretation of how much you feel that you can and do control your life can influence your levels of stress and your sense of autonomy.

As with all psychological constructs – that is, qualities that have been defined by psychologists but cannot be directly observed – one must be sceptical about locus of control. Nevertheless, it is interesting to read about this construct and its potential importance in your growth and development.

At this link from the MindTools.com website, a careers resource site, you can read about this construct and take a simple interactive quiz to determine whether your locus of control is largely internal or largely external.

Naturally you should view your quiz result with healthy cynicism – but it could tell you something you didn’t know about yourself.
